| After
using the University of Memphis’
Bachelor of Fine Arts as a launching pad,
David took off by entering many competitions
and earned various awards. Years passed
before the opportunity emerged to pioneer
the South Main Historic Arts District
by opening Gallery 509, which was used
to showcase both local and national artists
to the Mid-South. After it’s closing,
the majority of his artworks created were
for national designing firms, charities
including the Brooks Museum of Art &
The Orpheum, as well as a profile &
several covers of “The Downtowner”
magazine.
During
a vacation in San Francisco a few years
ago his style took a 90-degree turn. Taking
inspiration from the artist community’s
fearless use of color, unique varieties
of landscapes, and fascinating personalities,
David began new works. It is a quest to
incorporate those influences and create
a new style of vibrant, bold, energetic
piece and at the same time slightly skew
the usual everyday scenery. Each artwork
evolves by continually pulling from his
travels throughout the U.S., Mexico, and
Northern Europe, including an extensive
stint in Italy by way of Venice, Florence,
and Rome.
With
the new style emerged the “Memphis
Series” in which there are eleven
completed and 3 in progress. These works
are everything there is… and all
about this city, ranging from the various
stylings of music, unique down home foods,
diverse characters, and of course the
ever changing effects of the southern
light.
“ I wanted to create a new collection
of Memphis paintings spotlighting the
cities new revitalization efforts while
also giving a fresh touch to the better
known historic landmarks.”
Currently
David is in the process of marketing originals
as well as prints to International locations.
